Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
