Pentagon Investigation Finds Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by disclosing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The chat group in question contained particulars about a scheduled air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This discussion was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for handling classified information.

Potential Risk to Troops

The internal investigation found that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually did so.

Secretary's Response

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed information that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He further stated that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been shared with lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public later this week.
