Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team could be designing a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, letting players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
