Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The former head of state was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.
This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."
